Dancing Flowers

Performer: Hugo Miranda

At 17, in the fall of 2013, I composed Dancing Flowers. It started as an absolute piece of music, but my family thought it sounded like a lively, colorful dance, which led to its title. The composition is mostly in the classical style going perhaps into a little bit of romanticism. I do not compose in this style anymore but it was fun while it lasted.

What began as a simple composition ended up gaining some recognition. Dancing Flowers placed 4th in the Golden Key International Piano Composition Competition in 2014, which was a nice acknowledgment of my work and showed how music can resonate with people from different backgrounds.

The biggest part of the experience was being invited to perform at the winner’s recital at Vienna’s Ehrbar Hall. Standing on that stage, knowing its history, was definitely a highlight.

Sharing Dancing Flowers with the audience there was a great experience, and this video captures that moment—just one example of how a piece of music can reach across different places and cultures.
