Brass Quintet No.1

Midi recording

During my second semester as a master's student at Temple University in 2023, I composed my *Brass Quintet No. 1* in four movements. This piece represents my growth as a musician and captures a range of emotions, with a strong focus on celebrating triumph. Written specifically for brass quintet, the composition highlights the unique qualities of the instruments in the ensemble.

Inspired by various sources, I aimed to express a sense of triumph through the interaction between the brass instruments. The piece is intentionally non-tonal and can be quite dissonant at times, featuring a mix of powerful fanfares and more delicate, reflective moments while exploring a wide dynamic range.

Thematic material is woven throughout, creating a cohesive flow, while distinct brass techniques like fanfare motifs, intricate counterpoint, and expressive melodies help shape the overall sound. I aimed to bring out the strengths of each instrument while maintaining a balanced ensemble blend.

The *Brass Quintet No. 1* also offers a chance for musicians to showcase their technical skills. The score includes challenging sections that require precision and artistry, encouraging a collaborative and virtuosic performance.

My goal with this composition was to evoke a sense of accomplishment and joy, taking listeners on a musical journey that reflects the ups and downs of life.
